Billy T. James

This week we have started searching about how life for Maori was like back in the past and comparing it to today for example how Maori lived in wharepuni- rectangular sleeping houses there were stores of certain foods and they were hunting experts but nowadays. Maori don’t need to hunt they can buy from super markets and there are more luxury houses for everyone to live in. Along that our group has been researching a famous person named Billy James. We were reading two pages dedicated to him he was a shy boy who was passionate about comedy and sometimes even playing the guitar to the Maori hostel. He unfortunately passed 7 august 1991 at the age of 43 passing of heart failure. He was adopted by Sally and Jimmy Smith he had 12 siblings as well as having a daughter who is Cherie James.I learnt a lot of information just from two pages after researching some things about him I managed to find what school he goes to (Whangarei Boys High school) even finding out where he was raised and what his interest were.

Do you prefer to hunt or to buy ?

Technology

This term we have started tech. I am in a programming group today we played this game our teach had made so she gave us the layout of the game to program everything to work.Every morning we line up getting ready to get on our assigned busses with our groups. The subjects they have there are cooking, wood works, programming my one, plastics and more. The best thing about my current group is we get to play games. The not so best thing is if we want to play the games we have to program and make them ourselves.I haven’t learnt much but besides how everything works and what activates what also since I didn’t go last week.

Get Wise

This week Monday we had someone come in and talk to us about spending money. We had a little game in teams about spending 160 solar dollars. My team chose the first two cheapest options so for the last one we could choose a better quality item we had to save around 85 solar dollars. We talked about influencers earlier in the session and what can tempt us into buying things for example Ads,Sales people,Menus and social media they all add in some ways to try influence you to buy an item.I didn’t really enjoy the start I because there was too much talking for me I was bored and not really entertained. The next day on Tuesday we had another game about going on holiday to Fiji. We got into groups but me and Ella went alone together we had a max of 1800 dollars to spend if we spent over the budget we were out and we had to get the most enjoyment points my team had 12 points. We didn’t win but we didn’t lose either.

Science

This week we have been with our kaiako doing science experiments today we did one were there was milk and food colouring in one container than we got cardboard forks and dipped the ends in dish washing liquid after that we dipped the forks in the milk. The milk was separating away from the dish washing liquid and created pretty patterns with the food colouring.

Science

This week we have just started learning about gravity as our science experience. We got into groups of 4 and had 3 cups & 3 ping pong balls we tried two different tricks the first one was to blow the cup to push the ball out of the cup. Next up we voted on which ball would go higher the options were Basketball,Football,Softball,Dodge ball and a rugby ball a majority of people chose the dodge ball which they were right. The ball went the highest because it was full of air.

Heart&Lung

For the past two weeks me and my class have been researching the heart and lungs finding out facts how it works and more.We got onto this topic because of aping we have also started researching about smoking/vaping I have actually learnt a lot and the side effects that come along with smoking or anything related to that. I learnt some of the laws in NZ with smoking is that you have to be 18 or older to purchase a vape and 12 councils in Canterbury west region have changed policies to keeping there outdoors a smoke free area.

Peer Pressure

For the past week my class has been learning about peer pressure to explain what peer pressure is people think it is just a negative thing but it actually both negative and positive thing for example like wanting to do a sport so than your peers pressure you into signing up for it quicker in a negative way is forcing someone to do something they don’t feel comfortable with doing.

Water Safety

Water Safety

Water safety is very important to learn/know about and how to do because one when you are in the ocean or a pool and have no idea  what to do remember these skills.

Flotation skills are one of the most important things to know about Backstroke,Butterfly,Breaststroke and back float. There are lots more skills but these are just some of them. These are some dos and don’ts to keep in mind for the next time you think about going to the beach or in a pool.

Do                                                         Don’t

-Float on your back when you      -Don’t panic it will only

Think you’re sinking.                        Make you sink more.

-Put your hand up when you       -Do not use all of your

Are in need of help.                         energy screaming you will

                                                             tire yourself out.

-slowly start to flutter your

Way to the side of the rip while     -Don’t waste your time

It takes you back.                               /energy swimming forward

From the rip you will get

-When doing any floating skills        get tired and get pushed

Keep calm, rushing will cause you  back.

To run out of breath and lack of

Energy.

Using these can help you a lot the main rule is not to panic, stay calm and save your energy.

Project Jonah

Project Jonah

This week we met a lady called Kelly she works and researches more about whales and dolphins there are 88 species here are some names i learned Blue whale, hump back whale, sperm whale. We talked about how we can recycle what we can use and stop using. One thing i learned that there is a big piece of rubbish.

If there is whales on stranded it is most likely to be because it was chasing a sting ray after that the whales send loud messages for the other whales to send help but it only leads more whales to get stranded.Things to remember when around a stranded whale dont put a black sheet on the whale the son will reflect on it and heat up the instead put on a light sheet, poor buckets of water or use thick clothing, normal clothes and scoop the water with your hands.

You also need to be careful when standing behind because once the whale wakes up it will start moving around the whale’s tail is really hard and rough the muscle is the strongest in the animal kingdom. This is a photo of who to call when you see a whale stranded or more.

Credit&Interest

This week term 2 we have been writing about credit scores and interest first i’m explaining about the credit score. Credit score is a number between 0 to 1000 you can check your credit card and other loan places you can also look at your score if you have banqer it an app that gives money but it isn’t real. If you want to know if you have a good credit score its mainly 750 and up. It’s important to have a good credit score and credit file so it’s easier to be trusted by the bank and to be able to buy house, land and vehicles expensive things like that. Not every one in NZ has a credit score if they cant pay bills on time or if you haven’t started using it you wont have one.
